About Us

Birmingham Festival Choral Society sings a wide variety of the world’s best choral music from the 16th to the 21st century. BFCS also commissions new works, the most recent being Bob Chilcott, Circle Song (2004) and Patrick Larley, The Birmingham Spirituals (2014).

We perform three main concerts a year, usually in churches or concert halls in central Birmingham. Out of town concerts over recent years have taken place in Malvern Priory, Tewkesbury Abbey, St Laurence’s Church Ludlow, the Philharmonic Hall Liverpool, The Crossing, Worksop, and St Mary’s Church, Warwick.

In addition to this, we do a Christmas concert, raising money for charities nominated by our members.

MUSIC DIRECTOR

David Wynne became our Music Director in January 2017. He combines a passion for many styles of choral music with a great sense of humour and love for life.

David Wynne has been Music Director of the Ryton Chorale since 2013 and Arrow Vale Singers since 2012. He graduated from Birmingham Conservatoire with a Masters degree in Vocal and Operatic Performance (studying as a bass-baritone) and has been a soloist in both oratorio and opera.

While at the Conservatoire he was awarded a scholarship to study choral conducting with the influential conductor Paul Spicer.

In addition to his conducting posts David is closely involved in educational work: he is co-founder of the St Chad’s Choral Outreach Programme in Birmingham, and teaches and conducts at the Birmingham Junior Conservatoire, initially as Choral Director, directing the Senior Choir and Vocal Ensemble and teaching aural lessons. More recently he has become Vocal Co-Ordinator and one of the singing teachers as well as running the Choral Conducting course.

David also works for the Armonico Consort on their Choir Creation scheme and has recently been appointed as Vocal Animateur for Welsh National Opera.
